Discover the transformative power of mindfulness with AHMC’s latest program designed to benefit both children and adults. Based on the renowned work of Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, our mindfulness programs incorporate the highly effective Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) techniques. With almost four decades of success in alleviating anxiety, reducing stress, and enhancing overall well-being, MBSR has become a trusted approach for adults dealing with chronic pain and health conditions. Recognizing its potential, we have extended these mindfulness practices to children. Kabat-Zinn’s definition of mindfulness as “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally” forms the core of our program. By training individuals to be fully present and accepting of their experiences, mindfulness empowers them to pause, acknowledge their emotions, and respond appropriately. This ability to recognize and regulate emotions is especially beneficial for young children, providing them with a sense of control and empowerment. Extensive research has demonstrated the wide-ranging benefits of mindfulness for children, including increased attention span, improved self-regulation and self-esteem, enhanced coping mechanisms, and reduced levels of depression, stress, and anxiety. Although the field of mindfulness programs for children is still evolving, the initial results have been promising, leading to the expansion of programs worldwide. At AHMC, we are proud to offer such a program to our community. Our Mindfulness Program, known as “The Mindful Child,” draws inspiration from the techniques and principles developed by Susan Kaiser Greenland. This engaging and practical program aims to cultivate mindfulness within the entire family, bringing attention, balance, and compassion to daily routines. Through “The Mindful Child,” participants will:
• Learn universal themes that foster a wise and compassionate worldview
• Develop six crucial social, emotional, and academic life skills, enabling them to attentively manage and regulate emotions with sustained practice
• Benefit from five time-tested methods used by mediators for centuries to cultivate mindbody awareness and navigate life’s challenges
• Follow a loosely structured sequence of Play, Practice, Share, and Apply to maximize engagement and application of mindfulness techniques At AHMC, we are thrilled to host “The Mindful Child” program and contribute to the well-being of our community.
